Colby Vance Earns First Tour Win in Caution Free Martinsville Race
Ridgeway, VA – Colby Vance of Portsmouth, Virginia has been waiting for this moment for over seven weeks now as the Easter Super Series has started to come to an end for the winter. However, each time the laps wound down he was unable to find a way around his teammate or he would get caught up in a late race accident. Not this time, however, Colby Vance found himself in victory lane at one of the most prestigious tracks on the circuit. He also became just the third winner during the inaugural CorvetteParts.net Super Late Model Tour.
Queen again flexed his muscles and looked poised for win number six on the season when he set quick time during single car qualifying. Queen was the only car to hit a sub nineteen second lap – 18.976. Vance was a close second just seven hundredths of a second off. Burnett, Knott, and Neff rounded out the fastest five starters.
As usual, once the green flag was displayed, Queen jumped out to an early lead and looked to set a blistering pace. In just twenty laps he had distanced himself from Colby Vance by just over a full second. Burnett looked to hold pace with Vance as everyone settled down and got into a nice rhythm our the half-mile paper clip. Behind the top three, however, was some close bumper to bumper racing between the second group of cars made up of Brian Neff, Shawn Pierce and Tim Knott. The three stayed line up in the order for most of the feature until Knott was able to make the pass on Pierce to take the final position in the top five away.
Even further behind was group number three of the feature lead by the No. 90 of Craig Kenny. He was followed closely by the No. 2 machine of Justin Kern – who currently occupies the third place in points behind Queen and Burnett. Kern was monkey in the middle so to speak holding off Jesse Call but was unable to make the pass on Kenny to collect more championship points.
It was around lap fifty when in the eventual caution free feature that Vance would hit the after burners and start reeling in Queen for the race lead while leaving Burnett behind. Vance was able to cut about a half to a full tenth off Queen’s lead every lap setting up on of the most exciting passes for the lead all year. With just twenty laps to go and working their way around lap traffic, Vance would enter turn four better then Queen, the two would make a little contact causing Queens machine to shoot up what looking banking Martinsville has to offer. Vance was able to muscle his way into the lead and eventually collect his first win of the season and regain valuable points lost earlier at Concord
