Brenden Queen’s Dominance Continues at Southern National; Wins TheWeeklyRacer.com Winter Classic 125
Lucama, NC – With the 2017 holiday season behind us, the KeenParts.com Super Late Model Tour returned to action, this week the series rolled into the high banks of Southern National Motorsports Park located just off I-95 in North Carolina.
South Carolina native Steven Burnett piloted his Viter Energy No. 5 machine to the top of the speed charts in practice. However, when it came time to put the lap down that counted, defending race winner and current points leader, Brenden Queen clocked in at 13.298 seconds or 108.29 MPH – becoming the only driver to hit a sub 13.3-second lap all evening. Steven Burnett, Connor Hall, Colby Vance and Tim Knott rounded out the fastest five starters for the 125-lap feature.
Queen jumped out to an early lead when the green flag was displayed but to say it was a commanding one would be a stretch. Hampton, Va driver Connor Hall would take the top spot from Queen on lap eight and look to not only hang onto the position but set the pace. The caution flag waived early and often, eight separate times to be exact, throughout the evening as drivers were getting their feet back under them from a two week break. Hall was able to his advantage as the leader to hold off multiple restarts and retain his position at the front of the field. That was till lap 60 when Queen took the position back and from their Hall’s night started to take a turn for the worse after leading a race high 52-laps.
Queen’s night was not made any easier as teammate Colby Vance was able to get by the Chesapeake, Va driver and lead 25-laps of his own. Queen, however, flexing his muscles late in the race, used a couple of late restarts due to some full contact Super Late Model racing behind him, to fight his way back to the race lead on lap 92. From there on it was lights out for Queen who collected his third consecutive victory in the KeenParts.com Super Late Model Tour. Vance and Bridgewater, Nova Scotia, Canada driver Shawn Pierce would rally late and give Queen a fit, however bad luck continued for the Pierce who found himself wrecked in the closing laps. Tim Knott, who managed to keep his nose relatively clean all evening stole himself a podium finish while outside pole sitter Steven Burnett rallied back from earlier contact with Hall to finish fourth. Brian Neff out of Toledo picked up his first top five finish of the season playing the survival game.
“We got racing with Connor there early and I just let him go to save my stuff,” Queen said in victory lane. “I honestly felt like I raced too hard with him. I am normally pretty good at not burning my stuff up and I knew I was in trouble when Colby was in second after we got by Connor, I knew he had been saving."
Queen went on to say that he knew he would have to race Colby hard there coming to the end of the race even thought the two are teammates.
“Yea, Colby and I are teammates but we are here to win,” Queen explained. “I know when it comes down to it he is going to race me hard and he knows I am going to race him hard. We both want the win thats for sure. Luckily it worked out for us there in the end."
Racing will continue next Monday night as the tour travels to South Boston, Virginia for race number four.
