Concord, NC - After starting the 2018 season off on what some would call the wrong foot, Steven Burnett was finally able to put the right foot down and run away with the victory this past Monday night in Concord in dominating fashion. After setting the fastest time in both practice and qualifying, Burnett was the only driver to clock a sub fifteen second lap – 14.993 (120.06 mph) – to earn his second TWR pole award of the year, his first since the season opener. Austin Davis, who had a strong run at Langley Speedway last week in his debut qualified second. Colby Vance, Brian Neff, and Travis Wall completed the fastest five starters.
Burnett wasted zero time when the green flag was displayed on the Turn 4 Racing Old School 125 driving his Knightfire Tactal Company No. 5 Toyota out to a very comfortable lead and never looked back setting a quick pace over the field. Behind him, however, things got pretty wild pretty quick as the caution flag was displayed a record ten times throughout the 125-lap feature. With the season just past the half way point, drivers who are in the top five in points are fighting tooth and nail for every position they can get so they can win the inaugural CorvettePerts.net Super Late Model Tour Championship.
Leading every single lap, Burnett was the only driver to pull down pit road when the checkered flag waived with a clean car as attrition played a major roll in this past Monday’s race. Combine a tricky triangular track with tight racing and you are bound to have a few accidents. A few that saw drivers on their lids while others lost engines due to contact. Only four drivers were able to finish the race on the lead lap with Burnett, one of those drivers happened to be points leader Brenden Queen who finished second for the second time in a row this season. Craig Kenny, who has returned to the series after some internet issues plagued the Canadian based driver, managed a third place finish while Tim Knott and Colby Vance rounded out the top five.
“Man it just feels good to finally get that win,” Burnett said after the race in victory lane. “We just had a meeting about that this week at the shop how this year just has not been our year. The guys really got to work and did their homework on this track and gave me the best car they could and here we are, finally got the monkey off our backs."
Talk around the garage after the race focused a lot on the handling of the car and how everyone felt the setup was just a little off this week and the car was too low for the track. We asked Steven if that changed his driving style at all.
“Yea I mean the car was a handful thats for sure,” Burnett said. “This track is so fast and so banked that we put some insane amount of load on the car in the corners and it was just dragging a bit which made it tight. It took some getting used to and some small adjustments on the drivers part but we were able to get it figured out and quick and you can see how that paid off for us. I really just cant think the guys enough for sticking with me through those first couple of races. We are leaving here sitting third in the points and even though Justin, our teammate, didnt have a great night, both MRM cars are going into the back half of the year top five so things are looking pretty decent right now."
